Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems (FOKUS)

The Fraunhofer Society is the largest public European Research, development and Innovation organization in the field of security and Information and Communications technologies. Within eSDI-Net+ two institutes of the Frauhofer Society will be involved.

The Fraunhofer institute FOKUS based in Berlin with its more than 180 employees is researches and develops mobile communication systems in wireless and wired networks. FOKUS engineers the modules that enable the complete seamless integration of technology with end devices and the deployment of open flexible communication services and applications. FOKUS is actively engaged along the whole line – from generating future-proof solutions, technology assessment, method validation and standardization support to project management, quality control, and the development of prototypes and operational / security concepts. Fraunhofer FOKUS Competence Centre ELAN for Electronic Government and Electronic Health boasts solid know-how in terms of technical and semantic interoperability, service-oriented process chains, smart cards, digital signatures, identity management as well as knowledge management. The FOKUS eGovernment Lab now cooperates with over 30 partners from industry, public administration and evolves international concepts for the eGovernment domain, including international companies such as IBM, Microsoft, Oracle as well as several administration application vendors. The laboratory became a competence centre for testing the interoperability of platform technologies and applications and for setting up an eGovernment reference infrastructure. The associated eHealth Lab offers specialized knowledge for electronic health records and related standardization. The Lab develops showcase scenarios, conducts interoperability testing, and optimizes business processes. Fraunhofer FOKUS is integrated in a wide-spread European and international network of eGovernment stakeholders and is establishing a worldwide network of eGovernment-Laboratories. eGovernment-Laboratories exist already in Poland, Brazil and Belgium. Future eGovernment Laboratories in countries such as Estonia, Greece, Norway, Peru, Portugal, Russia, Ukraine are in preparation. The Lab also presents cutting-edge solutions and the results of international research projects.
