SADL Katholieke Universiteit Leuven R&D (SADL)

SADL is a R&D division of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium and will be the unit active in this network. SADL was set up at K.U.Leuven to manage and further develop the applied research, vocational training and consultancy activities in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Earth Observation and more recently Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI). Currently the division has 19 staff members from different disciplines which all have expertise in GI and/or EO technology.

Seven academic research units participate in SADL: (1) the Institute for Urban and Regional Planning (Prof. Albrechts), (2) the Division for Soil and Water Management (Prof. J. Feyen), (3) the Division for Forest, Nature and Landscape Research (Prof. J. Van Orshoven, Prof. H. Gulinck), (4) the Geomatics Engineering Research Group (Prof. P. Coppin); (5) the Institute for Social and Economic Geography (Prof. D. Vanneste), (6) the Physical and Regional Geography Research Group (Prof. G. Govers) and (7) the PSI-VISICS research group of the department of electrical engineering (Prof. L. Van Gool). Prof. J. Van Orshoven is head of the Division. In line with the research activities of the participating academic units, SADL offers considerable thematic expertise with respect to land, water, forest, nature and landscape management, agri-environment, urban and regional planning, traffic and transport management, socio-economic issues like tourism, housing. It is complemented by important technical (databases, information systems, applications) and organisational GIS -, EO- and SDI expertise.

SADL has since its inception finalised 102 small to large GI and EO projects at the local, regional, national and European scale. The projects relate to urban and spatial planning, land and water management, agriculture, environment, transport and mobility, tourism, etc. They range from (applied) research (including 5th and 6th FP), scientific and technical support, consultancy, GI en EO database and system development to education and training. SADL carries out the INSPIRE – State of Play Study in collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Centre for Law and ICT (ICRI/K.U.Leuven) and Margaret Hall (independent consultant). The study aimed at getting an overview of the status of the development of the National Spatial Data Infrastructures in 32 European countries (2002-2005).

K.U.Leuven R&D is involved in the identification and analysis of Best Practices (WP2), the Best Practices Showcases (WP3), Awareness and Dissemination (WP4) and Project Assessment and Sustainability (WP5). Besides this, K.U.Leuven R&D is one of the organisers of the eSDI-Net+ Duch and Belgian SDI Best Practice Workshop, which will take place end 2008 – beginning 2009.
